From life-saving surgeries, to the discovery of a stigma, malnutrition and the need for a community that gave hope.
In 2024, one of our Church 365 members and partners shared a heartbreaking need from the field. Through his work as a neurosurgeon, he discovered a staggering number of children dying from a treatable condition called Hydrocephalus, often referred to as water on the brain.
Because of deep-rooted superstition, many of these babies were abandoned or even killed, as families wrongly believed they were cursed.
A simple surgery costing just $700 CAD can reverse this condition and save a child’s life.
In 2024, with the help of incredible partners, we were able to perform 20 life-saving surgeries.
When the babies returned for their three month follow up appointments, it became clear that many were not thriving. A number were malnourished, and many mothers felt discouraged by the constant discrimination they faced from their families and their community.
In the summer of 2025, Pastor Sonya traveled to Liberia and launched Moms of Hope, a support group that gathers mothers quarterly for encouragement and care. Moms in the program also receive food supplements and medical support for their babies as needed.
The Moms of Hope program continues to grow as new families are added throughout the year following completed surgeries. Many of these mothers are raising their babies on their own. Our hope is to help open doors for them to return to school or receive a small microloan to start a business, so they can become independent and thrive while caring for a child with ongoing needs.
Would you help a Mom take her next step?
